What Is Chakra?

Chakras, meaning “wheels” in Sanskrit, are spinning centres of energy within the body. They continuously influence our physical, emotional, and mental states.

Often described as gateways to higher awareness by Carl Jung, chakras help us understand the deeper connection between our body, mind, and consciousness.

They regulate the flow of life force energy—known as prana, qi, or shakti—which supports balance, vitality, and overall well-being.


The Body’s Energy System

The human body is made up of both physical and subtle energies.

On the physical level, the body consists of tissues such as bones, blood, and organs, along with the five elements—earth, water, fire, air, and space.

On the subtle level, it includes:

  • Prana (life force energy)

  • Mind (manas)

  • Intellect (buddhi)

  • Emotional consciousness (chitta)

These layers work together to shape how we feel, think, and experience life.


How Energy Flows Through the Body

Prana flows through energy channels known as nadis, connecting the physical and subtle bodies.

There are three main nadis:

  • Sushumna – the central channel along the spine

  • Ida – associated with intuition and calm energy

  • Pingala – linked to action and vitality

Ancient traditions describe up to 72,000 nadis, forming a complex network that supports the flow of energy throughout the body.
